The Earl Hamner House
The house was built in 1915 as a company house by the Alberene Soapstone Company in Schuyler, Virginia. During the late 1800's, a massive underground deposit of soapstone was discovered in the area with an exposed section near Schuyler. With the establishment of a stone cutting plant for the area quarries, Schuyler quickly became a company town, comprised of mostly company built houses and businesses.
Doris and Earl Hamner, Sr. bought the house in 1929 when Earl, Sr. worked as a machinist for the soapstone company. In this house, they raised their eight children: Earl, Jr., Cliff, Marion, Audrey, Paul, Bill, Jim, and Nancy. The house remained in the Hamner family for seventy-four years. After Doris and Earl Hamner, Sr. died, their youngest son, Jim, continued to live in the house. When Jim became ill in 2003, the house was sold in an auction. In 2004, the Earl Hamner House was recognized as a Virginia Historic Landmark.
Today, the Earl Hamner House remains true to the era in which the Hamner's bought it. It is filled with period antiques, a few of which belonged to the Hamner family. A model for the studio house used in The Waltons series, the house also contains memorabilia signed by the cast of the show.

"I will always love that house. And, sometimes cold chills come over me thinking about the times we had there." - Earl Hamner
