Crabtree falls
Crabtree Falls is mentioned in several episodes of The Waltons. Visiting Crabtree Falls on opening day of trout season was a special time for the Hamner family. Every year on that day, Earl Sr. and his children would head to the falls. They carried their fishing poles, bait, and a lunch consisting of sardines, crackers, and Coca-Cola. As the children straggled along, Earl Sr. had one destination, the top of the falls.
Crabtree Falls is a fifty minute drive from the Hamner House. It is located at 11581 Crabtree Falls Highway, Montebello, Virginia. It features a series of five major cascades and a number of smaller ones. It is the highest vertical-drop waterfall east of the Mississippi River. The first overlook for the falls is located just a few hundred feet from the parking lot. It can be reached by taking a gentle, paved path, making it accessible for visitors of all ages and abilities. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can take the three-mile trail to the top of the falls. After reaching the upper falls, you can also follow the creek for another 1.2 miles to the Crabtree Meadows
